Bullying brought home to your space

Pranks have a way of getting out of hand, especially when they involve teenagers with non-existent forward-planning skills. Alex Boston, 14, sued two classmates for libel and cyberbullying in the US after they created a fake Facebook account of her with a racist video and sexual comments posted friends’ pages, ostensibly from her..........

Bullying and ragging have become institutionalised in schools and colleges the world over, with most of us emerging partially scathed from one or more such episodes of childhood malice. Cyberbullying — intimidating, offending or embarrassing others using smartphones, personal digital assistants and social media networks — however, is far more pervasive because it follows children out of the school, taking harassment right up to their homes.
Cyberbullying is underreported because it usually goes unnoticed. In India, three out of 10 parents said their children were victims of cyberbullying, mostly through social networking sites. Another 45% parents believed their children were being cyberbullied, but had no specific information on it.........
Like malicious rumour, virtual bullying hurts without leaving a visible mark. It works insidiously by causing social exclusion, which can cause depression, insomnia, low self-worth and weight gain.........
Children who are on their own, a lot without adult supervision, are more likely to turn to bullying as a means to assert themselves socially, just as an isolated child left to himself most of the time may become a victim of bullying both online and offline................

Need to revisit Information Technology Act

The Information Technology Act has to be revised to incorporate issues of social media and social media crime, says cyber law expert and Supreme Court advocate Mr Pavan Duggal.
“Technology outstrips the pace of law. The law is silent on social media crime, the obligations of publishers, what people should and should not being doing on social media. There is a need to revisit the IT Act which was amended in 2008 to incorporate these issues.”
Referring to the recent incident involving three Karnataka ministers who allegedly watched porn during the State Assembly session, Mr Duggal said charges can be slapped against the Minister who had the clipping stored in his cell-phone, under Section 67 and 67 (A) of the IT Act.
On the recent Delhi High Court order to 22 social media sites to pull out inflammatory content, Mr Duggal said these Web sites were trying to get away by saying they were bound by US laws and were not amenable to Indian norms.
“These companies want to operate in India but do not want to comply with Indian laws. If your target is the Indian ecosystem, you then have to comply with the laws here and disable content from the Indian networks at least......................”

‘Cyber' friendship leads to crime

A friendship struck on a social networking website led to the rape of a Mumbai-based married woman here this month........
Two of the accused, Aneesh and Suresh, both employed in the Gulf and hailing from Kallara near here, had befriended the woman on the social networking site. The woman, whose husband works as a salesman for a satellite television company in Mumbai, had become active on the online social networking site when she worked as a beautician in Bahrain...........
Last month, Aneesh informed her that a shopping mall owner in Dubai was searching for a trained beautician to take charge of a cosmetic centre he had set up there. He also told her that the mall owner's business associate, Suresh, who was also an online friend of the woman, would be in Thiruvananthapuram along with his partner for interviewing her, among other applicants.
The woman took a flight to the city and met up with Suresh, who took her on a cab driven by one Manikuttan to the government guesthouse at Ponmudi, where the interview was slated to take place. He told the woman that the mall owner would arrive only next day and she would have to stay overnight at the house of a friend near Kallara. Suresh sexually exploited the woman in the house that night.
The shattered woman flew back to Mumbai but kept the incident secret. Matters came to a head a few days later when Suresh called her and said he had used a hidden camera to video-record their stay at the house.....
He threatened her that he would post the video on the internet unless she paid him money.......

Footing mobile bills: Don’t get conned by agents

Beware of callers who offer to collect your payment on behalf of your mobile service provider as more than a hundred cases of customers being duped by impostors have come to light. Recently, a leading mobile operator has also complained to police in this regard.............

The telecom firm reported getting numerous complaints from customers who allegedly made cash payment of their bills to the impostors, only to have their accounts deactivated for defaulting on payment. A case of cheating and fraud has been registered against unknown persons.

The fake executives who approached the customers had done their homework. They possessed all the details and left no scope for doubt as they even carried forged identity cards and visiting cards. First, they call up customers and inform them about the pending amount. They usually call up a customer again and ask whether they want an executive to collect the payment from their doorstep. If the customer agrees, the impostor visits the customer and collects the payment. They even provide fake receipts against the received amount..............

Social networking can lead to divorce

The next time you feel like getting naughty on a social networking site, think again.

Writing or uploading not-so-innocent posts and pictures could put an end to your marriage. These seemingly harmless tasks are increasingly being used as material in divorce and custody proceedings in India........
Posting certain information and pictures online can be "dangerous". In India, electronic evidence is admissible in a court of law. While a social networking site may not disclose the evidence of a relationship, what is uploaded shows inclination of one person with another and can be produced in court. Electronic material is also considered a 'document' under the Indian Evidence Act.
Many times people have contacted their exes or classmates and started a flirtation that has led to something else...........
While it seems easy to have an affair or flirt with the opposite sex on a social networking site, it can wreak havoc in one's marriage..........

Internet censorship protests gather steam

Protests against government's alleged attempt to govern the internet is gathering steam, with a public interest litigationin Kerala, a signature campaign and mass protests in Karnataka besides the political left throwing its weight behinds demand to withdraw the recently amended laws.

The new rules, adopted last year, regulates reader's comments on online articles, user-posted videos, blogs, photos and posts on online social networks such as Facebook or Orkut. Opponents say it gives government powers to gag free speech, and block websites without publicly disclosing why...................

Information Technology Act, amended last April, clarified the legal position of "intermediaries" such as social networking sites, search engines and cyber cafes that provide internet services. The rules notified had met with widespread opposition from internet activists who termed the guidelines "draconian."

The new rules mandate intermediaries not to host information that is blasphemous, grossly harmful, harassing, invasive of another's privacy, racially, ethnically objectionable, disparaging, belongs to another person and harm minors in any way.......................

Before the amendment, section 79 of the IT Act shielded intermediaries such as Google, Facebook and Twitter from any liability for user generated content. However, the amendment makes it necessary for the intermediary to observe "due diligence" and advocates of internet freedom fear that this will empower the government to act against dissent based on a set of arbitrary and loosely defined rules...................

‘Data breach costs Indian organisations Rs 5.35 cr annually’

Symantec’s data breach study reveals that Indian organisations spend Rs 5.35 crore to remediate a data breach. The study, conducted in partnership with Ponemon Institute to assess the annual cost of data breach among Indian organisations, has put the average total cost of a breach at Rs 5.35 crore, with malicious attacks proving to be the costliest type of data breach, at Rs 4,224 on each compromised record.
(Malicious attacks are attempts to forcibly abuse or take advantage of someone’s computer with the intent to steal personal information or reduce the functionality of a target computer.)
The study further revealed that each stolen record costs Indian organisations Rs 2,105 on an average. While the average cost incurred in notifying customers or victims has been estimated at Rs 15.6 lakh, costs incurred by victims to detect and escalate was found to be higher at Rs 1.64 crore..........
To prevent data breaches and protect confidential information, organisations should identify and classify information after assessing the risk, deploy technologies to prevent data loss, implement two-factor authentication, educate employees on information protection policies and hold them accountable and finally integrate the policy into business processes...........

Cyber criminals making targeted, sustained attacks

2 out of 10spam mails come from India......

Cyber criminals have increased targeted attacks in the first quarter of 2012. Advanced persistent threats (APTs), a long-term, on-going campaign versus the typical smash-and-grab incidents, too are on the rise.
Attackers have piggybacked on visible events such as Whitney Houston's death, and socio-political upheavals around the world to penetrate and infect users and networks and gain access to victims' data. The payload is a malware that is silently executed on the target's computer. This exploitation allows attackers to take control of and obtain data from the compromised computer.............
New social networking site, Pinterest that helps people ‘pin' content, is one of the victims. Site users were drawn into re-pinning a Starbucks logo to get supposed gift cards but instead got malware........
India has emerged the top source for spam in the first quarter with a share of 20 per cent of all spam generated globally. This was followed by Indonesia (13 per cent), South Korea (12 per cent), and Russia (10 per cent).
The report found that there were 5,000 new malicious Android apps during the period. With the increased use of smartphones for Internet access and the huge Android user base, the increase in attacks targeting the platform is thus not surprising....................

A funny mail can land you in jail now

Admit it. All of us love poking fun at politicians and their antics. But who would have known that forwarding an innocuous joke could land one in the police lockup? Calcutta-based professor Ambikesh Mahapatra found that out to his dismay last week. The professor, who forwarded a rather tastefully done cartoon of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee (which drew inspiration from Oscar-winner Satyajit Ray’s film) to his friends and shared it on his Facebook page, spent a night in police custody after being heckled by goons from the ruling party.

If this the end of free speech online? One would think so if one goes by the government’s actions....

First, we had the government hauling up social networking sites for objectionable content. While the Union Minister for Telecom and Information Technology, Kapil Sibal, hastily clarified that it wasn’t an attempt to regulate the web, a self-proclaimed intellectual filed a case against a host of IT companies for content on social networks that “hurt” sentiments…………….

India has had a rich tradition of political humour. But if some politicians are so sensitive as to take offence at every sarcastic comment about them, the world’s largest democracy has had it……

NTRO may check cyber crime cases

The government is contemplating making the country’s premier technical intelligence agency, the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), the nodal agency for all cyber-related crimes in the country.

Highly placed government sources said there was a growing view within the government that with the increasing use of technology, particularly computers, in terror related cases there was an urgent need to have an umbrella organization which can co-ordinate with all State agencies and police force on such cases..............

The National Technical Research Organisation has also been directed to expand its area of operation and a new unit within the agency has now been carved out to deal exclusively with what is being described as “increasing cyber threat from China.’’ It is suspected that China-based cyber experts are always attempting to hack into the data base and sites India’s sensitive ministries and departments to access information....

At a recent meeting of the NTRO top brass and senior intelligence and security officials it was believed that Indian agencies were far behind China when it comes to expertise in cyber related crime. Thus, the NTRO has been directed to immediately enhance it capacity to match that of China...............

With 82 percent of technology users concerned with webcam hacking

In the wake of several high publicity webcam hacking cases, 82 percent of laptop users expressed concern about the possibility of their webcams being 'hijacked........

Representing the latest trend in cybercrime, webcams provide an easy way for individuals and organizations to spy on users. Last fall, a Rutgers student committed suicide after a webcam secretly videotaped him kissing another man. Unfortunately, such incidents are not limited to college pranks....................

These cases illustrate that webcam hacking is not a hypothetical risk; it's a reality.........

Hackers can access a webcam in less than a minute, and would-be hackers easily learn the process with tutorials and free spying software available for free on the Internet. Since most laptops, tablets and an increasing number of gaming devices and televisions are manufactured with built-in webcams, the potential for webcam privacy invasion grows daily.

Webcams provide cybercriminals with access to potentially embarrassing information that could be used to bully or blackmail laptop owners. Beyond peeping, the technology also provides opportunities for cyber-stalking, hate crimes, burglary and identity theft.......

Networking sites to the rescue

When a major tsunami hit the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004, newspapers and TV channels had gone into overdrive to explain what a tsunami is.

Seven years later, the word tsunami needs no introduction. Wednesday’s earthquake off the west coast of northern Sumatra triggered a wave of trends on social networking and micro blogging sites. Facebook witnessed thousands of postings alerting friends and near and dear ones while on Twitter seven of the top 10 trends were related to the tsunami.

Even national governments used Twitter and Facebook to issue alerts about tsunami. The Union ministry of external affairs posted updates about the earthquake and its aftershocks and alerted Indians living in tsunami-prone countries particularly Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore........................

Thanks to mobile phones, social networking and micro blogging sites, people started taking precautionary measures even before the governments officially issued tsunami alerts to warn citizens...................

Trends on Twitter alerted users of the earthquake which had its epicentre near the west coast of northern Sumatra.
