Children susceptible to cyber bullying

With easy access to movies, music and other softwares online and connectivity of people just a click away, increasing number of children are falling prey to cyber bullying.

According to a recently released survey of online security technology firm McAfee, 62% of children shared personal information online and 39% of parents were unaware of what their children do online. The survey says 58% of the children polled shared their home address on the internet while 12% have been victims of some kind of cyber threat.

Mumbai had the highest cyber bullying levels, with one-third of the children reporting that they were subject to either cyber hacking, fraud or identity theft. The survey was conducted on 500 children of age group 9 to 17 across 10 cities of the country.

Next gen kids:

42% in the 13-17 age group spend 1-2 hours online in a day.

60% in the 9-12 age group have e-mail accounts.

64% in the 9-12 age group are members of social networking sites.

62% of the children were asked for personal information online.

53% shared their home address, city and contact details online.

What parents believe:

32% parents believe their children spent too much time online.

49% parents believe their children owned e-mail accounts.

54% believe that their children are members of social networking sites.
