In five years, city's crime graph climbs 15%

PUNE: Crime in the city is 15% higher since 2005 when 11,817 cognizable offences were registered to 13,602 in 2010. However, the all-time high of 14,467 crimes in the five-year period was registered in 2008. The number of crimes - both under the IT Act, and IPC sections increased. Most cases pertained to forgery or criminal breach of trust or fraud.

An analysis of crime figures in various cities as brought out in the latest 'Crime in India' report for 2010 by the National Crime Records Bureau ( NCRB) has new aspects. In all, 3,68,883 cognizable crimes were registered in 35 cities with Pune accounting for 3.7% of the total crimes.

Pune has a high number of student population using the internet and it is an IT hub. People earlier were not aware about what action they could take after a cyber crime. Today, they approach the cyber crime cell or the police stations.
