Cops go hi-tech to crack cyber crime

NEW DELHI: While cases of cyber crime are on the rise in the city these days, the police is equipping itself with modern facilities to combat this menace. Delhi Police is the first force in the country to get a 'cyber forensic van' — that is already in use by Los Angeles Police DepartmentScotland Yard and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The next time police receive a report of any cyber crime or terrorist activity which involves the use of computers, they will drive this state-of-the-art van— also called a mobile cyber labto the spot to pick up 'electronic evidence' which can be instantly analysed.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (EOW) S D Mishra told TOI, "We need to seize electronic evidence on time. This van will save us a lot of time."
The Cyber Forensic Van costs Rs 50 lakh and is equipped with computers, communication networks, a database of cyber crimes and forensic examination equipment . It also has facilities such as wireless sets, a portable independent energy system and high speed internet access. The van arrived in the city a few days ago and presently undergoing some modifications . It will be operated by atleast four trained cyber experts of the Delhi police.
"Usually it takes five to six hours to transport electronic evidence to a cyber laboratory , where it can then be analysed for clues. This van will enable us to lift evidence immediately from a spot and examine it," said a senior police officer.
Initially, the van will be used by expert units of Delhi police—Special Cell and Cyber Crime Cell of Economic Offences Wing (EOW) — and will be made available to local police stations whenever required , said a source.
"In the past, groups like the Indian Mujahedeen have hacked into Wi-Fi connections and sent e-mails after carrying out bomb blasts in the capital. At that time, we had to lift the electronic evidence from the spot and take it to an immovable laboratory. But this mobile lab will reduce the time it takes to investigate such cases," an official said. The new laboratory will also help to detect people who make obscene calls or send lewd messages via mobile phone. At present, the Delhi police has two immovable cyber crime laboratories and around 200 police officers who have been trained to investigate cyber crimes.
