New Delhi: The Central government is planning to include cyber security system in the National Disaster Management Plan in the wake of threats faced by Indian cyber space last year. The Stuxnet worm, which targeted the nation’s critical infrastructure, had also affected more than 60 percent of Iran’s computers.
Realising the need of the hour, a meeting was convened to tackle the looming cyber menace and avoid any threat in future.
Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor, three defence chiefs, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman, Cabinet Ministers of Foreign, Finance, Defence, Telecom, Communications, Space Department and several secret agencies heads attended the meet.
To measure the threats of cyber crime, the cyber security audit of prominent organizations has already begun. On the basis of the results, significant agencies will be deployed to maintain the cyber security of important networks.
One of the important recommendations made in the meet is to develop a National Cyber Alert System (NCAS), which will deal with security threats through early warnings and response.
The meet also decided that NCAS will involve critical infrastructure organisations, with public and private institutions performing analysis, conducting vigilance and sending out timely warnings to enable effective information exchange.
Another important recommendation was that regular drills should be conducted to check cyber security preparedness in IT-dependent businesses, along with updating contingency plans of critical sectors to minimise damage and recovery time.
Sector-wise emergency response teams for key sectors such as finance, defence, energy, transportation, telecommunication, oil and gas etc will also be constituted for effective check.
Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor K Mathat will constitute the functioning of this system under a project.
National Information Board, which has been formed to combat the cyber crime, has already crossed the first stage by discussing the strategy in the meet.
