The Cyber Crime Wing of Punjab State Crime Branch, Mohali, arrested a person for creating a fake profile of a woman on the a popular social networking site, Facebook. The accused has been identified as Kanwaljit Singh (25), a resident of Jagraon and a computer software professional.
The State Crime Branch had registered a case under sections U/S 66A, 66D of the Information Technology (IT) Act and Section 419, 509 of IPC on the complaint of a woman hailing from Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), State Crime Branch, said, “The motive behind this crime was to defame the complainant because of some personal enmity of the complainant with another woman close to the accused.”
The case was investigated by a team of officers headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Vibhor Kumar.
The complainant had filed a complaint before the Senior Superintendent of Police Crime Branch that somebody had created a Fake ID in her name on Facebook. In the profile, basic information including her phone number and other details were provided. Her profile further mentioned that she was an organiser of a musical dance group and could be contacted on her mobile number and e-mail.
The Senior Superintendent of Police has advised internet users to share minimum information on Facebook and verify the identity of the person before adding him or her in their friend list. He informed that one can make complaints through email at policehelp100@gmail.com or on the website at ssp.cyber-pb@nic.in.
